SCP 8006 Data Research and Analysis Intern
Job Summary
The Exeter Innovation team have an opportunity for a student to join them in a research and analysis role, to map the innovation capability and capacity of the Somerset Council region. You will use data tools and records to compile geographic, demographic, and growth data on innovation ventures, skills availability, investment, and clusters. Your analysis of the output data will help to highlight continued areas of investigation. During this internship you will work with local authority stakeholders and gain experience in innovation ecosystem mapping and evaluation.
This role is part of the Student Campus Partnership (SCP) scheme and offers 2 days of work per week (14.6 hours) between Jan and Feb 2026. You can work remotely with an end of project presentation at the Firepool Centre for Digital Innovation, if possible.

Purpose of the Role
Data collection and analysis to provide the evidence base for the Somerset Innovation Hub to plan targeted innovation services intervention in the region.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Using data tools such as Beauhurst and companies house to compile a simple database of innovation ventures in the somerset region.
- The use of ai to profile the ventures to identify commonalities.
- Utilising web/ai research methodologies to map education and skills data against the compiled research.
- Utilising web/ai research methodologies to map funding capabilities against the compiled data.
- Liaising with the Somerset Innovation Hub Business Support Manager to analyse the data output.
- Presentation of findings in data and report formats.
Training and Development - What Skills and Experience will this Opportunity Provide?
- Experience of using industry standard data tools to undertake research.
- Experience of innovation ecosystem mapping and evaluation.
- Advanced understanding of the evaluation of regional innovation parameters, such as the impact of rurality on innovation.
- Experience of working with local authority stakeholders.

- Undergraduate students can work a maximum of 15 hours per week in term-term or full-time hours in vacation.
- Full time Postgraduate students can work a maximum of 6 hours per week and no more than 180 hours per year, this includes those working already working as Postgraduate Teaching Assistants (PTA). You may work more hours with written permission from your academic.
