Energy Consumption & Sustainability Analyst

This is a 12-week paid internship opportunity, as part of the WMG Internship Program working with 3T additive manufacturing group.  

Are you passionate about sustainability and making a measurable difference through facts and data? 3T additive manufacturing is offering an exciting internship opportunity for a motivated individual to lead a data-led investigation into the company’s current energy consumption, identifying “quick wins” and developing an implementation plan with ROI calculations to reduce energy consumption by 30%. The successful intern will help shape the future of 3T’s energy reduction strategy and make an immediate impact on energy reduction at site.

 

The core aim of this project is to understand and work towards reducing 3T’s energy usage by 30% across all business infrastructure. You will be responsible for producing a detailed report highlighting key findings and practical actions to help reduce the company’s energy consumption, including an implementation plan, capex and non-cap investment and ROI calculations.   This internship will benefit your:• Analytical skills – working with data to identify energy consumption trends and inefficiencies• Process engineering and operational improvement skills• Sustainable development and carbon reporting knowledge

The internship is based at the company site in Newbury, Berkshire and you will be working closely with the 3T CTO, gaining first-hand experience within a complex additive (3D printing) manufacturing infrastructure environment. You may be required to Visit WMG at the University of Warwick as part of the internship, access specialist equipment or attend physical training.

As part of the Programme, you will also benefit from weekly supervision and support by a WMG expert throughout the duration of the project.

About the company:

3T is one of the earliest adopters of metal additive manufacturing (AM) globally, acquiring its first metal printer in 2007. Since then, we have cultivated a wealth of high pedigree material & process data, whilst simultaneously helping to incubate the careers of the talent that exists across the industry today. ​​

Since restructuring in 2021, focus shifted from additive prototyping to a leading series production manufacturer of finished components. This transformation has been driven by a new and experienced leadership team, supported by Sharing in Growth.​

 

Duties and responsibilities
 

You will lead a project to analyse and report on 3T’s current energy use, with a focus on identifying inefficiencies and opportunities for improvement. This will include developing practical recommendations for reducing energy usage and emissions, clearly grouped by implementation timescales.

Main activities will include:

  • Collecting and analysing data on current energy consumption across infrastructure
  • Mapping where and how energy is used, and identifying areas of energy waste
  • Developing recommendations grouped into short-, mid-, and long-term actions
  • Producing a final report with an impact statement for each recommendation (e.g. potential £ savings, carbon reductions)
  • Presenting findings to internal stakeholders
  • Implement “quick wins”

 

Skills and experience
 

ESSENTIAL:

  • Undergraduate or postgraduate student studying Engineering, Environmental Science, Sustainability, or similar
  • Strong analytical and data interpretation skills
  • A passion for sustainability, energy efficiency, and reducing carbon emissions
  • Ability to communicate complex findings clearly in written reports
  • Excellent time management, organisation, and independent working
  • Confidence in working with numerical data and basic energy metrics
  • Self-motivated, driven, and proactive

DESIRABLE:

  • Knowledge of Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions and how they apply to businesses
  • Previous experience conducting audits or environmental assessments
  • Familiarity with industrial operations or infrastructure systems

 

Location
At 3Tam in Newbury for most of the placement with the possibility of several trips to WMG in Coventry.
