SCP 7689 Student Information Assistant
Job Summary
You will play a key frontline role in a diverse and dynamic team providing key support to University of Exeter students.
As a Student Information Assistant (SIA) you’ll act as the first line contact for students, staff, and external visitors to the University. You will provide information and support for virtual and physical services in the Forum; manage queues and assist enquirers with the use of our enquiry management system. You will provide information from the University website and FAQs and complete a variety of general administrative tasks. You will work across multiple areas within the Forum including the Student Information Desk and the Forum Street. Whilst the focus of the position is the Forum, you may be required to work at various locations on Streatham and St Luke’s Campus.
The Student Services Centre brings together many student facing services including: Career Zone, Student Finance, Student Records, Accommodation, AccessAbility, and International Student Advice. SID is the enquiry point for the SSC, this friendly, efficient and student focussed service acts as a single gateway for questions.
Primarily SIAs help with the highest-volume admin and customer service tasks. However, you will be trained on a wide variety of interesting tasks and systems including historical record archive work and event support such as with the graduation ceremonies. You may also be involved in developing and running projects that grow SID’s service in quieter periods.
This role is part of the Student Campus Partnership (SCP) scheme and offers part time hours with increased hours during key busy periods. This role is from September 2025 to July 2026.

Selection Process & Interview
- You will be invited to 1 of 2 in-person interview days. Your attendance is compulsory, as this is part of the selection process. The interview dates are 2nd & 3rd June. You will take part in an interview and work-based task, this is expected to last approximately 1 hour.

Working Hours
- Undergraduate students: Between 6-15 hours per week during term time, with possibility of up to full-time hours outside of term time.
- Postgraduate students: 6 hours per week, and with supervisor support- up to 15 hours with the possibility of up to full-time hours outside of term time.
- This role cannot be used for a year in industry as part of your course.
Working Pattern
You will support the running of the SID Desk alongside Student Information Advisors during service hours. You will be expected to work increased hours over arrivals weekend and welcome week (full-time) and in the first weeks of term (15 hours per week) when SID is at it's busiest.
You will be required to work on a rota basis between 8am-6pm, Monday to Friday and a proportion of Saturdays, 9am -5pm, during term time. SID is open 9am-5pm Monday to Friday out of term time.
Due to the frontline nature of the SIA role there is no provision for remote working.
Peak periods for 2025/26 are as follows (please note that these dates are subject to change, but you will be notified in advance):
10th - 11th September: Mandatory Induction and Training
12th - 14th September: Arrivals Weekend
15th - 20th September: Welcome Week
22nd - 27th September: Week one term one
W/C 15th December: Winter Graduation
5th – 10th January: Week one term two for 2025/26
May (To be confirmed): Exams Period TBC for 2025/26
July - Summer Graduation Preparation and Ceremonies 2025/26 (exact dates are to be confirmed and are subject to change).
The successful candidates will be required to physically attend 2 training days taking place on the 10th and 11th September. There will be flexibility to accommodate your academic timetable and course commitments throughout the year.
The number of working hours in these later peak periods will be agreed in advance but will be in line with university guidelines.

Student status- additional information
- If you are an undergraduate (UG) student, your student status will expire one month after the end of your course.
- If you are a postgraduate (PG) student, your student status will expire 6 weeks after the end of your course.
- PG students have restricted hours if work in accordance with the Employment of Postgraduate students- Code of Good Practice.
- For both UGs and PGs if your graduation ceremony occurs before this period is over you automatically assume graduate status.
- If you are an interrupted student, you will not have current student status and are therefore ineligible to apply for or continue with an SCP internship.
- If your student status ends early the SCP internship will also need to end early.

- If you are already registered on the Paid time system you will still need to bring your Right to Work evidence to interview and may have to present it again to HR, if it has been 6 months since you last presented it.

Your employer will need it to pay your National Insurance contributions which is a legal requirement. No one else can use this number and it is not related to health insurance.

You do not need a National Insurance Number to prove you have the right to work in the UK, but you will need one for when you have secured a job. If you are actively seeking work and applying for jobs, you should apply for a National Insurance Number as soon as possible so you have it ready before you start working.

Postgraduate Teaching Assistants (PTAs) - additional information
- As per Employment of Postgraduate students- Code of Good Practice.
- Full-time PG students should not normally exceed 6 hours per week and in all cases must not exceed 180 hours per year averaged over the course of the academic year.
- If you are already employed by the university and paid through main payroll you cannot be paid through the Paid time system. As a part-time PTA you will need to be paid using the PTA103 form or any other roles using the PD103 form. All forms will need to be sent to the Pay and Benefits team by emailing payandbenefits@exeter.ac.uk. Further guidance will be provided on appointment.
- Part-time PG students can work the maximum 15 hrs per week during term time and more during vacation, but no more than 814 hours per year.
- All PG students working as Postgraduate Teaching Assistants (PTA) cannot work in total (PTA and SCP work) more than 6 hours per week and more than 180 hours per year.
