Deutsche Bank UK

Intern

June - August 2023 • London, England

What I liked

All of the employees were very friendly and you get to join a great team. You stay in 1 team throughout the internship which gives a better understanding of that area. The work you do is also very engaging and a great way to get learn more about what your business area does. You get involved in a lot of calls with employees around the world and get to learn more about what they do in that region. There are plenty of socials with other interns (around 120!) so you still get to see them during your time there, and also get to experience a very enjoyable CSR day! There's a midway mini-presentation that helps you get good practice for the final presentation at the end of the internship.

What I wish was different

N/A. Overall, a very good experience, nothing comes to mind that I would change.

Advice

Network! This will be a new experience for many (especially for those without a background in Finance) so ask plenty of questions with people in and out of your department and learn as much as you can. You'll learn a lot about what you might or might not like. Take a notebook with you and arrange catch ups with people, they're always happy to impart their knowledge (and connect on LinkedIn after! ). The internship also gives speaker sessions where senior members of the bank have a discussion around their career which is great way to learn how you can move around and grow inside the bank.

What I liked

Following my 9-week internship with Deutsche Bank, I believe that I have furthered my professional development, learned and developed multiple skills, and feel in much better stead to enter the workplace after graduating from university next year. The opportunity started with a week-long online training and networking course. It enabled me to learn more about the organisation and its values, as well as the financial industry as a whole. It also provided a platform to connect with all the other interns before starting at the desk the following week. As part of our training, we learned more about the divisions that we were going into, as well as professional skills such as presenting, developing a personal brand, and networking. From my first day in the office, I was made to feel very welcome and valued. This was aided by the selection of a mentor and buddy during my time with the company. I was positively surprised by the level of work that I was entrusted to complete. The workload was just right, keeping me sufficiently busy and on my toes, without being too overwhelming. My manager was very supportive and, through our regular 1-on-1 meetings, enabled me to consistently improve and reflect upon my work. I'm extremely grateful for the experience and all of the support and guidance that I was given while at Deutsche Bank. I was certainly impressed with the organisation and its values and would recommend the opportunity to others.

What I liked

I really appreciated how many opportunities there were to learn, both through group sessions with various team members to go through key processes, and one-on-one discussions about the deals I had been staffed on. All of my team members were happy to answer any questions that I had. There were also several cross-divisional talks, networking events and socials which meant I could get to know the rest of the intern class and learn more about what each of their respective teams does. Lastly, I feel that the mentor/buddy scheme was invaluable. Having experienced mentors outside of my team who I could speak candidly with about what was going well and what I was struggling with, helped me to settle in more quickly. My mentors were able to provide advice and reassurance, as well as helping me to grow my network within the bank.

Advice

Ask for help sooner rather than later. There may be day-to-day tasks which you get stuck on, where there is a quicker and more efficient solution. Likewise, for the intern project, there may be parts of the analysis which you are attempting for the first time; it will be much quicker if you identify the gaps in your knowledge and ask about them, rather than attempting to work it all out on your own.
